Frederick Franck (1910-2006)

Noted artist and author of The Zen of Seeing

Artist and writer Frederick Franck passed away June 5 at the age of ninety-six. Best known for his work The Zen of Seeing (1973), Franck had several celebrated exhibitions in leading American and European galleries. He went on to create a sanctuary and sculpture park he called Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), home to sculptures of the Buddha, Christ, and other representations of what he identified as the "True Human." The Dutch-born artist has authored over thirty books, including Ode to the Human Face (2004), filled with photographs and essays and published when Franck was ninety-five years old. Nearly fifty years ago, he and his wife Claske spent three years working in a clinic in Africa run by Albert Schweitzer where Franck produced both My Days with Albert Schweitzer and African Sketchbook, which includes an introduction by Graham Greene. Franck was inspired by Schweitzer, D.T. Suzuki, and Pope John XXIII, three people in whom he truly felt "the human capacity."
